In most Italian films and TV shows on Netflix, you can be pretty confident that you’re hearing standard Italian, although actors may have regional accents or use some local expressions.

Italy’s regional languages and dialects can be very different from standard Italian, but mainstream media usually uses Italian so that everyone can understand. Some shows, like My Brilliant Friend, intentionally include regional speech (in this case, Neapolitan) because it’s part of the story and setting.

For learning purposes, watching Italian shows is a great idea. Even regional accents can help train your ear and make you more comfortable with real-life Italian.

That’s a great question—and you’re absolutely right about the general rule.

Grammatically speaking, invitar is a transitive verb, so when it refers to a male person as a direct object, the expected form is indeed invitarlo. The use of the personal a doesn’t change that, as many verbs that take direct objects also require the personal a, just as you mentioned.

So why does invitarle appear in the lesson?
What you’re seeing here is an example of leísmo, which is very common in Spain and is considered standard and acceptable in that variety of Spanish when referring to male persons. In those cases, speakers often use le instead of lo, even though the function is still that of a direct object.
To summarize:

Invitarlo → grammatically correct everywhere, and the safest option across all Spanish-speaking regions.
Invitarle → reflects standard peninsular Spanish usage (leísmo) and is also correct in that context.

Fluenz exposes learners to these real-world variations so you can recognize them when you encounter Spanish from different regions, even though we generally reinforce the traditional direct/indirect object distinction as the core rule.

You’re thinking about this exactly the right way—nothing is “wrong” with your understanding. It’s just one of those cases where usage and regional norms add an extra layer on top of the grammar rules.
Best Regards!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience — and welcome back after completing all 5 levels of Spanish! It’s great to hear you’re enjoying the German program, even with the extra challenge of cases and genders. That’s totally normal, and you’re making excellent progress.

Many learners like to add light reading, slow-German podcasts, or short videos just to get more exposure. These work really well alongside the structure we provide.

One lesson per day or two?
Even if you have more time, we usually recommend sticking to one full lesson per day. The lessons are dense, so using your extra time to review, repeat listening comprehension, or do some Audio Workouts will give you better results than rushing ahead.

Caroline’s comment refers to Jacques Lacan’s well-known idea that “time” in a psychoanalytic session isn’t fixed but subjective. In practice, Lacan was actually famous for doing variable-length sessions — sometimes very short, sometimes longer — so he didn’t bill by the traditional 50-minute hour. Instead, he charged per session, regardless of its duration.
So yes, he questioned the idea of structured time… and he billed accordingly!

“Aquí le envío las respuestas” means “Here I am sending you the answers.” It’s in the present tense, so it’s the right choice when you’re attaching or including the answers right now in the message.

“Aquí le envié las respuestas” means “Here I sent you the answers.” It’s in the past tense, so it’s used when you already sent the answers before and you’re just pointing it out.

If you’re sending the answers in the same email/message, you should use “Aquí le envío las respuestas.”
If you’re referring to an action already completed earlier, then “Aquí le envié las respuestas.” is correct.

Fluenz User Support

the tricky A

Great question! In Spanish, when two verbs appear together, usually the second one goes in the infinitive form without “a”. So in this case, the correct form is “Voy a intentar vender su casa.”

The reason is that “intentar” is a verb that doesn’t require a preposition before another verb — it connects directly to the infinitive (intentar + infinitive). That’s different from other verbs like aprender or empezar, which do require a preposition: “Aprendí a nadar” or “Empezó a trabajar.”

So the pattern is:

intentar + infinitive → Voy a intentar vender su casa

aprender a + infinitive → Aprendí a vender casas

Hope that clears it up!

The Fluenz Commons is meant to be a space where learners connect, share, and help each other with language questions, but we completely understand the frustration when conversations go quiet for too long. While our team does join in, the main goal is peer-to-peer exchange — still, we’ll make sure to be more present so questions don’t go unanswered. And just to reassure you, Fluenz is very much active: we continue to update and improve our programs (some languages have received major upgrades recently, while others get ongoing corrections), even if that’s not always reflected directly in Commons. For anything requiring a direct or prompt response, the fastest way to reach us is always through usersupport@fluenz.com
, but we also want Commons to feel like a lively, supportive space and will keep working on that. Thanks again for being such an engaged part of the community — your feedback really helps us improve.
