Fluenz' attitude seems to lean toward exclusively, offering immersion trips to Antigua and Guatemala for the "special ones" who can afford it. They apparently believe that's a better idea than improving the program for all users. So this is where I get off.

perhaps they are doing both at the same time.

You do realize that as a company, offering multiple products or services is not a new thing. Should Apple only have one product that they constantly work on until it is perfected and ignore other opportunities?

What about all the models of cars that GM, Ford, etc. offer and yet they have a few duds for models in their lines with issue. Should all production of other products stop?

Nothing wrong with fluenz, or any other company, tweaking their software, ever notice the periodic service packs? They are also multiple versions into their programs as well. The immersion trips are a nice product for those that can afford it and do not take away from working on the code or content of the software. Do you really think that they send a bunch of coders and other developers to the trips too thus productivity stops?

Fluenz has been a great tool for learning.

Fluenz has only 1 product. Each language costs the same, so any improvement should be accessible to all. I'm a big fan of Fluenz. I've sung their praises many times but cannot overlook their shift toward exclusively.

Are you really intending to say that the introduction of a single product that you can't afford is enough to drive you away from the rest of the products that you consider excellent? Do you feel this way about every company that introduces a product you can't afford, or is your resentment directed exclusively at Fluenz?

Honestly, I don't understand your point of view. I'm retired and living on a very fixed income, so I can't afford jaunts to foreign countries for language study. But I certainly don't hold it against any company that makes these trips available.

Yes, that's what I'm intending to say. And it's fine if you don't understand or agree. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. I'm not on some sort of crusade, I've just made a simple choice for myself. I'm not asking for a refund and will not disparage Fluenz and do not resent Fluenz. I happen to have strong feelings toward exclusivity. When you say "every company" that infers companies that make more than one product which is not the case with Fluenz. My question to you is why are you bothered with my choice? We all make choices every day that differ from one another. Are you bothered by every choice that differs from yours? A choice you might make that does no harm would not bother me. It's called free will and we are all free to use it as we choose, unless of course that choice brings harm to another person or group. When my daughter was growing up and in school she tended to be snooty at times. I put a stop to this by telling her it's not fun unless it's fun for everyone. I'm a firm believer in equality, justice, diversity and inclusivity. I don't know why that's difficult for some to understand.

Hi George. I wanted to share some of what we've been up to hoping you reconsider leaving the Commons. Less than a year ago we launched a complete rewrite of the Fluenz Spanish program which represented a considerable investment of time and money on our part. Every workout and every video was rewritten based on what we had learned in the prior eight years of feedback and of course, everything was rerecorded--every hour of video (believe me, it isn't easy to sit in the studio for days at a time), as well as more than 10,000 audio files and their corresponding written elements. And as soon as it was ready we gave it to every single customer who had ever purchased it going back to 2008, at no cost to you. This year we've re-recorded all of Fluenz French, soon to be available to every single user as well. And right now we're working day and night to complete the new Mandarin Chinese, which will be provided free of charge to every single person who ever purchased the original going back to February of 2007, more than 10 years ago. Another team is hard at work overhauling our mobile apps in order to keep up with the very fast moving world of iOS and Android. We think that Andy's help desk team is as responsive and fast as ever, if not better. This massive on-going investment made for customers that paid once is our definition of exclusivity. Once you join the small and tight-knit Fluenz family we work as hard as we can to provide the best platform in the world to learn languages. Fluenz Digital has always been the most expensive program in the market but we've never stopped working to deliver real value for that money. Now we're launching Fluenz Immersion with the same philosophy. It isn't an inexpensive program by any means but the feedback we've received from all participants who finished their cohorts is that the program met and mostly exceeded their initial expectations. Because we value every single Fluenz Digital and Fluenz Immersion client for whom we've created our exclusive community of serious language learners I hope you choose to continue participating in the Commons.

ojosdeverdes: I'm not sure why you characterize my opinion as being "bothered." I simply disagree with you, and I was expressing that. You mention free will, but don't take into account that I was just exercising mine. So, since you're inclined to misinterpret so readily, this will be my last post to you.

Hi Sonia. First let me say thank you for contacting me personally, that goes a long ways and is much appreciated. There was and is no doubt in my mind that Fluenz is head and shoulders above the competition. I know this because I've tried many of the more popular ones including Babble, RS, Ouino and a couple of lesser knowns. I do have to be honest and say that I do wrestle with the immersion trips because it leans toward exclusivity, however, now that you've spelled out for me the upgrades you have done for no extra charge it will cause me to reconsider. It was less than 10 days ago that I purchased levels 4 and 5. So maybe I am being a bit rigid on this one. I hope you understand that in this world, and nation, that has become so sharply divided, it causes many people to make choices we never considered having to make. A person would have to be in a pretty deep slumber to believe there is "liberty and justice for all" in this country and I will always promote diversion, equality and inclusivity. I would love to see a "native speaker" option here rather than going out to italki or other sites that offer that service, and would be willing to pay a nominal fee, similar to those on italki and even a bit more for someone who is familar with the Fluenz program. In my mind that would be a key element and well worth a few extra bucks. I'm sure you'd acknowledge that a person can only learn so much before they have to start using it or losing it and that's the position I find myself in at the moment. So I'll hold that vision and reconsider my position. Thank you again for sharing with me the costly and time consuming efforts you have provided to all users at no cost. You and your co-founders truly have created a superior product. And Andy and the user support team is without a doubt top notch. I am surprised more people don't contribute to The Commons but it's likely you'll see me continue to post. All the best to you and your team.

Many thanks to mshideler, Sonia Gil and Dennis G. You have all helped me realize my perspective on this issue was rigid and skewed. I hope to see more activity on the Commons in the future. It is a powerful tool within an already superior product.

hi ojosdeverdes. i've used Italki very successfully for Spanish and Chinese 1 on 1 conversations with a native speaker. I think that might help you as well and the prices are very reasonable.

@Fabrice, that was pretty much where I had decided to go, so thanks for the confirmation. Did you use it with Skype? Do the teacher/tutors there use Skype for their conversations?

Almost every teacher use Skype and Skype is free to use (don't buy the subscription it's only to call landlines). I've used a couple of teachers for Spanish and Chinese and was very pleased with both. The rates go from $8 to $25/h depending on the teacher and if they are certified teachers or not. I used both types, certified to enhance the grammar and community teacher for conversation. Most of them have video introductions so you get a feel for their abilities and way of teaching.
