Thanks to all the people who have written us directly and who posted here and on Facebook with feedback about the Flashcards. Clearly this is something the entire Fluenz community has been waiting for. The team that is working on this project is very proud of all the positive comments the beta version has received. We've been slowly fixing some of the bugs users have pointed out and are looking to improve in many areas.

There is a pipeline of great additions to Fluenz and hopefully most of them will be received with the same enthusiasm as these Flashcards. The feedback has given us even more energy to finish development and start launching all these new features in the Fluenz learning experience.
One of the first things we hope to have up and running is a redesign of the Commons themselves. We realize the navigation is not great and that we need a lot more interactivity--and it needs to be more closely linked to the learning experience. After that we'll launch several new ways to improve your learning, and more ways to access what we've already built. Hopefully I'll have news of all this activity very soon (and Italian users fear not, we're not slowing down on Italian 3).

In the meantime please continue sending us feedback for the Flahscards. We can't wait to get to the 2 and 3.0 stages.

PS. Where to find the Fluenz Flashcards? As an integral part of the Fluenz programs they are available to all Fluenz users. Register if you haven't (use the code that came in your original red box) or login if you haven't and you'll see the link on the My Commons box, to the right of the screen. If you are logged in you can always go directly to fluenz.com/commons/apps/flashcards.

Hi Sonia! As you know, I made cue cards (flash cards) for Fluenz Spanish (all five levels) about a year ago and shared them with anyone who asked for them, including you! I still have the email where you asked to see what I created and I sent you the cue card files for Spanish 1 way back in April of last year! :)

It's wonderful to see that you and the folks at Fluenz have instituted the idea here on the Commons. They look much better than mine! And there's audio. Great job!

It looks like audio is for card 5 starting on the written card 1.

It was on also on Spanish Lesson 9 also but it looks like card 3 audio is synced with the first card.

I just tried on Mandarin 1 Lesson 1 and it was the same.

Fluenz Team,

These flash cards are GREAT! They supplement my learning so much. I’m just starting Spanish 3 now and can take a lesson and review it (when I have time in the office) via the flash cards.

¡Perfecto!

The flashcards are wonderful! thank you very much for adding this feature.especially adding in the audio.
It is so very ..important to keep hearing the correct pronunciation of words..and repeating along with the instructor.
. In the future it would be great if we could do some sort of on-line class, perhaps via skype (with a
pre-planned type lesson) so we can practice speaking with others who are trying to advance in the language they
are learning. something with the teacher supervising..

I like the flashcards very much! Thank you! They do help reinforce the material. I think the audio is really useful as it allows me to listen to the phrases and repeat them, which I hope is helping my speaking.

I have been using a free program, available at: pauker.sourceforge.net which does not have audio. But it does have some nice features. I like the learning method, with immediate repetition and gradually lengthening the intervals of repeating. You get a feeling of accomplishment doing them.

Suggestions I would have for the flash cards would include:

- Scoring / progressive learning
- A button to exit saving your progress (I can't find one)
- A button to open a comment / bug / question window (popup)
- Cookies to remember what language I am learning, and the level I am working on

Overall, I really like the flashcards, and will probably replace the hundreds of ones I have made with what you have. Thanks again for the great work!

Wll definitely check out that site, thank you for sharing it.
I think that the audio is very important and the repetition is a "must do".
It helps loosen your tongue when you keep practicing speaking and repeating after the teacher
to get the accents correctly.
Those are great suggestions Marshall for the flashcards.
I also pre-made many flashcards, but it is more fun to go through with a touch of an arrow
on your computer.

Some problems have just cropped up. Yesterday, on the normal Spanish Flashcards (not iPad) the program remembered where I was, and functions worked well. Today, I can't do anything with them. I am getting a white box overlaying all the prompts at the top, and I can't access any of them, one program tries to start showing flashcards. It does still remember where I was, but if I try to restart the level I was on, I get a "Session Complete" message. And that white box means I have no way to get back to the menu. The white box looks like it may be a typing input box, but that is a guess based on the fact that a cursor shows up in the middle of it.

Also, if I change the lesson to avoid the 100% complete, that doesn't work - even with a new lesson I get the 100% complete message / screen. So right now, I can't use them.

Windows 7, Firefox 3. I like them a lot, and hope you can fix them (again) soon.

Hey Marshall. We've been making a lot of changes these past couple days for the iPad version, but now I'm back to focusing on the desktop version. I'll post here later this afternoon once these issues have been resolved.

I absolutely love the flashcards, but I'm stuck on Spanish Level 1, Session 7. I want to progress to Session 8, but when I click the down arrow to choose it, nothing happens. In fact, now none of the arrows work. And before this, I had the same problems Marshall mentioned except I'm using Windows 7, IE 8.

I can't say enough about Fluenz - great program with the DVDs, CDs, podcasts & now flashcards.

The audio should be working now. It was just a small Firefox bug where it wanted to use Flash to play the audio, which isn't necessary.

It is also good to listen and repeat the language you are studying
and cover the English to see if you understood the words and/or
sentences.
A sort of reverse flashcard system to see if the language
is being understood when heard.

That's possible if you choose the Oldschool Flashcards adn then click the English > *language* at the top. That will let you see the word and hear the audio in the foreign language first, with the answer being the English translation.

Ciao Sonia, I started my :Italian3 with the audio CD first, because I really like practicing after the professional speaker. I went through the whole #3 audio; which was just terrific! The only blooper I caught was on one of the tracks when you asked for RED to be said in Italian and I didn't hear the Italian word for RED. Unless it was just my AUDIO CD. warm regards, Rosemarie S

Bonjour Sonia!

I have just completed Fluez French, Level 1. I made extensive use of the Flashcards to speed up my learning. Along the way I noticed a few issues, or at least I think they are errors: I have documented 3 of them that you may want to look at (or explain to me!)

1. English: six hundred eight two
My answer: six cent quatre-vingt-deux
Flashcard WRITTEN answer: six cent quatre-vingt
Flashcard VOICE Says: six cent quatre-vingt-deux

2. ENGLISH: one thousand five hundred
My Answer: mille cinq cent
Flashcard WRITTEN Answer: mille cinq
Flashcard VOICE Says: mille cinq cent

3. ENGLISH: ninety one
My Answer: quatre-vingt et onze
Flashcard WRITTEN Answer: quatre-vingt-un (81)
Flashcard VOICE Says: quatre-vingt et onze

There may have been one or two other that i forgot to document...

Thanks for providing such a useful tool!

Tom

Bonjour!

Some thoughts regarding the Flashcards:

1. Would be great to flip things around - hear the voice, write the language as an option
2. Would love all the workouts to be available in a similar format - choose a picture, listen to dialog, hear the word. Match the phrase, etc.

The above two things would make the flashcards an incredible review system. I found that using the flashcards after each lesson for extra drill, plus doing an ALL lesson review after each 5 lessons really accelerated my recall.

Thanks again for this great program, I'm really enjoying it.

Creating a Flashcards app for Android is much trickier because the device itself can vary so much (screen size, etc.). We will certainly create one though.

Love the flashcards, thanks for adding! A couple questions: someone else mentioned above - is there a save option? So if I don't get to 100%, can I save my progress and come back and complete it later? Also, I am on Spanish 2-8 and want to use flashcards from all my previous lessons: Spanish 1: 1-30, and Spanish 2: 1-8. It does not seem I can combine spanish 1 and 2. Is that correct? Would be a great enhancement as you progress. Again, love Fluenz!

Your progress gets saved automatically. The next time you open up the Flashcards, you'll see a "Resume" button on top. That will take you back to exactly where you left off.

As for combining levels, that can't be done at the moment. I doubt that's a feature that will get added soon, but I'll certainly keep it on my list because it would definitely be an improvement. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the help! When I go back in and click resume it starts back at 0%, so I guess that kinda of threw me off as I thought it would be at the percentage I left it. But good to know it is thinking resume.

It should be at the percentage you left it. Either tomorrow or the day after I'm going to start spending time working out little bugs that exist in the Flashcards, so I'd expect this to get resolved for youl

I have been so impressed with Fluenz since I purchased it back in June. The flashcards have been especially helpful in reinforcing what the lessons teach me. My huge regret is that I didn't know anything about Fluenz before I went to German language school in Berlin. Had I taken
this before going overseas, I would have done even better than I did in Berlin. Keep up the great and innovative work and I look forward to new tools to expand my knowledge of German!

I received the German set of DVDs last week. I am now up to Lesson 11 on Session 1. I have learned more in this short time than several years of dictionaries and grammar books. I also enjoy the online flashcard help and review lessons mixed in. I am very pleased with the Fluenz product. The tutorial explanations are great and I look forward to continue to learn through the course. Danke schon

Something that I think would greatly extend the Fluenz experience is to have an ebook or pdf that expanded on some of the topics. Having written for both print and audio/video media, I know that the latter has its limitations in presenting technical material. Even in a fifteen minute mini-lecture, you can only cover so much. When a concept is introduced that I find difficult to grasp, I turn to Edoardo Lèbano's "Learning Italian" and reinforce what I hear with his explanations (e.g., Reflexive verbs and pronouns beginning on p. 89.) But he often uses different examples (not so bad) or includes material that Fluenz does not yet want us to know (not so good if it further confuses or diverts one's attention.) And finding what you're looking for in the book can be tough. It would be great to have a companion Fluenz-specific volume that included the sentences and words being used in each session along with expanded explanations of the grammar concepts.

I think this is an excellent idea. I would love to have a reference that covers the vocabulary that has been covered. Then taking it a step further to having reference to grammar would be such an awesome resource. I would be more than willing to pay for something like this as a supplementary product as well.

Sonia sometimes mentions material outside of the Fluenz program. For instance a comic book in German by - ? Flosse? - and also contemporary German music. Is their a "Links" page by any chance for this type of material? Thanks again for your efforts the Lessons are very good

Very good job on the French Flashcards. Some form of saving the scores for completed sessions may be something you can consider. The scores can illustrate the steady improvement and may also point out which sessions need to be reviewed. I have noticed that the Flashcard program is not always consistent. For example, the first time I complete a session the program will show that I missed 8 flashcards. The second time through I know for a fact that I still missed 3 flashcards but the program shows only missing 1 flashcard. Possibly a minor glitch. Overall I'm extremely pleased with the flashcards and hope that you will continue to add new flashcards periodically.

I've had a Fluenz license and DVD for two months or so-- but I had little time to study. However, I started today, and I love Fluenz, but it is hard for me to pronounce Spanish words correctly. So...I'm grateful for the flash cards. I used them after i finished my very first lesson. The flash cards work very well, and allow me to practice speaking at any time without being inside a lesson. Thanks.
