The iPad Flashcards are out and Eric did a nice video we've posted on Facebook. As always looking forward to your feedback.

It looks like a very nice implementation. Any plans for other portable versions, such as Android and iPhone?

Great job, Eric!

We're working on the version for the iPhone now, and would definitely like to expand it to Android.

I would also like to vote for an android version. There are a lot of affordable android based tablets on the market for those of us too cheap to pay $500+ for a tablet...

Just as a PS, the browser that came on my android 2.0 OS works with flash cards except for the audio. The arrows work as does the text.

Hi David. You get to them the same way you do on your computer. Open safari and go to fluenz.com/commons/flashcards.

As with your software, the flashcards are incredible. Thank you for making them a free add-on. My only issue so far is that the audio occasionally refuses to play. Seems to generally occur when I'm going through the cards quickly.

Hello, I'm a new Fluenz customer and commons member. I've been using the web-based flash cards and they are great! I'm looking forward to the iPhone version!

The only issue I've had is when typing answers, the flashcards say my answer is incorrect when I use two spaces to separate sentences. Is that a difference in writing between English and Spanish or a bug in the software?

Thanks!

Glad to hear that you're enjoying them so far. Extra spaces should not make a difference, but I see that I failed to take account of that in the code. If you refresh the page you will find that it's been fixed.

The flashcards are great, but I have one complaint. There doesn't seem to be any feedback mechanism to let me know if I've answered something correctly or incorrectly. With the Fluenz software, I can't progress to the next practice question until I've answered the current practice question correctly. On my first go-around, I thought that I would get a score or something at the end of the session instead, but this is not the case either.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this functionality just not built into the application?

Thanks!

When doing the writing Flashcards, if you get it correct you'll hear the "correct answer" ding noise and the answer will be shown. If incorrect, you won't see the answer automatically and, on the desktop/laptop version (not iPad), you'll hear the "incorrect answer" click noise.

We could certainly implement score tracking for the Writing Flashcards. I'll talk to some other Fluenz team members about it.

Thank you for the quick response, Eric. I'll try to figure out why I'm not hearing the "incorrect answer" click noise (not that I'm getting anything wrong).

You should also see the words flash red briefly when wrong (they'll turn green when you get it correct). In regards to the incorrect noise, what browser & version are you using?

I'm using my Mac running Safari 5.0.5. I've checked everything, but I'm still not getting any audio feedback for incorrect answers. Maybe this is the excuse I've been looking for to buy an iPad 2.

You're right! It's actually a bug in Safari, but I found a way around it. You should now start hearing the audio feedback for both right and wrong answers. I tested it on Safari 5.03 (i'm a little behind on my updates) for Mac.

Eric
I just installed the flashcards on my ipad2. I think they are a great learning aid. I have a question about the audio. The help menu says to tap the card to play the audio. The audio seems to play whether I tap the card or not. Sometimes it plays too quickly before I even have a chance to formulate my answer.

Is anyone else just getting a black screen when they go to the flashcard page? I've tried on Firefox, Chrome, and even caved and installed Safari to try to get them to work and the page is just black. Oddly though, my iPad does bring up the home page for the flashcards, but after I make all of my selections, when I hit the Start button, nothing happens.

Steven --

The audio should play automatically whenever you see the word/phrase for the language you're learning. For example, if you are using the Oldschool Flashcards and seeing the Spanish first (in other words, you have to swipe down to see the English) you'll hear the Spanish automatically as soon as the new card appears. But if you are seeing the English first, you'll hear the Spanish once you swipe down to see the Spanish word/phrase. And only once the Spanish word/phrase is showing will tapping on the word/phrase play the audio. Does that differ from your experience?

gregjeff --

It should be working for you now. For some reason, the Flashcard data you were using got stored improperly in our database, which can break the startup process for the app. So I had to clear out that data, meaning that you won't be able to pick up where you left off the next time you use the Flashcards. You'll be able to after that though.

I've tried using the flashcards (in french and italian!) on my Mac (Safari) and on my iPad. In both cases, as soon as I make my flashcard session choices and click on "Go," the red line goes to 100% and it says "Session Complete", then returns me to the set-up screen.

What's wrong?

justin,

I was just moving over a bunch of the flashcard files to a different location which is what caused the issue for you. Just refresh the page, make sure you click the "Go" button the first time (rather than the Resume button if it's available) through, and you should be all set.

On my iPad 2 the Spanish flashcards work as you described when going from Spanish to English. But when going from English to Spanish the Audio seems to randomly play. Sometimes the audio plays as soon as the English card is displayed. Other times the audio plays when a down swipe is performed to display the Spanish phrase. The cards work perfectly on my PC.

One other person reported this. Seems to only be an issue on the iPad 2 (I have the lowly first generation iPad), but I think I've got it fixed now. Let me know if you agree once you get a chance to try it out.

Hi Brian. It's not an iPad issue; it's actually only affecting you! The last time you used the flashcards, some of the data got incorrectly stored in our database. I'm going to look further into why that occurred, but in the meantime I've modified the code so that the Flashcard app won't fail when something like this happens. Instead, it simply won't remember where you left off last time (only temporary, next time you tap the Go button it should start remembering again).

Can you tell me if the last time you used the Flashcards you went all the way to the end and got the "Session Complete" message? That may help me figure out why we had this data problem in the first place.

Thanks Eric

I alternate using the Flashcards between my Ipad 2 and my Mac laptop, but I think I did complete the session, the last time I used it (but that was probably on my laptop).

The flashcards really are a fantastic supplement to Fluenz! I do have one comment though... I just went through eight sets of flashcards on my laptop as a review. When reviewing I tend to fly through them quickly and one thing I noticed is that my right pinky gets pretty fatigued continually reaching for the right arrow key in order to advance to the next flashcard. On any given flashcard you type in the answer, hit enter to see if its correct, and then hit the right arrow key to advance to the next flashcard. In addition to using the right arrow key to advance to the next flashcard, would it be possible to add a small code change that would also allow a second depression of the enter key to advance to the next flashcard as well? It would greatly reduce finger fatigue when traversing hundreds of flashcards in one setting.

Grazie!

I agree with you, JW, but I'd take it one step further. I not only don't understand why we have to press the right arrow, I don't know why we'd need to press the Return key more than once. If we've typed in the correct answer, hitting Return once should automatically advance to the next card. If we've typed the wrong answer, we should hear a tone, and the card should remain where it is.

I kind of like having to explicitly move to the next slide. After I find out that I typed the correct answer I like to reread the whole card to reinforce it in my mind and then move on. But, that's just me... Perhaps it could be a configuration option.

I've just completed French level 1, session 21 ... and noticed that many of the written number "answers" on the flashcards appear to be incorrect (the audio is correct, but doesn't match the written part, thus, my writing the correct answer registers as "incorrect"). This may have been commented on before, but didn't see it here ...

JW - great suggestion on the flashcards as I often get tired of reaching for the arrows as well. When just doing flashcards for 1 session, it isn't so bad, but when doing a larger group of sessions, it becomes a pain.

Of the solutions mentioned, I too like the idea of hitting enter twice to move to the next card. First time submits your answer, if correct, next time advances the cards.

tebell - you were able to use the flashcards briefly because i hadn't yet put in place the requirement that you register your software with us. The Flashcards are exclusively for Fluenz users, and registering the software is the best way we can confirm who is a Fluenz user. You should have received a card with a registration code when you originally ordered Fluenz.

Bonjour, the Flashcards have been an awesome addition to the software, it's helped tremendously since I can just grab my iPad rather than have to have my laptop & it allows me to work in odd places with manageable size lessons. I have noticed on occasion that with the cards that require a type-written answer, I sometimes get the "spoken" answer before I have a chance to type.
There are also a number of other little things ... uploading my profile picture won't work from the iPad clearly not a big deal & in the desktop software I've noticed that when I go back through lessons it appears that the workouts are static and not randomized - which in itself isn't too bad but when I review things that I'm having trouble with I've noticed that I've started to memorize the lessons rather than the answers :-)
one final thing, in future versions the ability to ask for a hint would be cool as well as providing some sort of feedback (score) would be nice. (being a bit of a propeller-head the thought that some sort of AI that could tell what you're having trouble with and focus on that material would be nice, AND yes I know ... And if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a trolley :-D
Again, thanks for an awesome product with a human company rather than a corporate monolith!

The commons is definitely NOT optimized for the iPad. I'm sure that most of it works ok, although I'm not surprised that the image upload is one of the things that doesn't work because that brings in a whole new set of computer security issues that each operating system has to handle differently. As for getting the "spoken" answer before having a chance to type, that clearly shouldn't happen. Can you give me a sense of how often it happens, like once every five times, once ever ten times, etc?

I'm really looking forward to Iphone version, since I would like to practice what I have learned, during my bus trip to work from NJ to NY everyday. When the flashcards first came out I was actually able to use it on my Iphone. It was running a bit slow but it was OK.
Could you please, please work on the Iphone version? I'll be very happy when that happens!!! :)

We have done some work on the iPhone version, but the project got stalled as some of us (such as myself) needed to turn our focus to other things for a while. I'm hoping to be able to turn my attention back to it and finish it up very soon.

OK, I am not the brightest bulb in the socket. I ride the subway to work, where there is no internet. (Actually, at the moment I am in China.) The subway does not have internet access. Are the flashcards downloadable or just available to utilize when online? Is there anything resembling a User's Guide, or is it trial and come to the Commons?

At this point the Flashcards are solely online; we don't yet have a downloadable app for them. In regards to your question about a user guide, I'm not quite sure what you mean.

Hi

I'm using the flashcards on my ANDROID TABLET but have an audio glitch? When I click the left arrow for the next phrase I hear 2 random clips of audio??

When I click the square it plays the correct chinese audio for the english/pinyin words on screen.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks

Will there be an iPad version of all the DVD lessons for Fluenz French eventually? I just bought Fluenz French 1-5 and an iPad version would be amazing. Also, if this does happen, would someone like me have to pay for the app, since I just bought Fluenz French 1-5?

Hi, first off I am loving your software so thank you for all your hard work. My issue is I am using the french 1 flash cards on my new iPad 2 and every few cards it won't let me progress to the next card when I hit return. I have to close the keyboard and re-open then hit return again. Sometime it just won't let me progress at all. ( answers are correct) Any thoughts? Thanks for your time

The need to close and re-open the keyboard is something I've experienced myself, although pretty infrequently. From what I can tell, it's simply a bug in mobile Safari, but I'll continue trying to see if I can find a solution to it. Can you give me an example of when your answer was correct but it wouldn't let you move on?

Hi Eric, yes I am still encountering this problem. In level 1, lessons 15-25, super mix/ random, writing " she speaks French very well and a little English" I write answer correctly but it won't let me swipe to move on. This on my iPad 2 safari...... I also just encountered the same problem as others in the forum of the never ending " creating your flash cards"

I'm glad that I can do the flashcards on my iPad... BUT I really wish is was an app instead of using Safari. It is very limiting when I am not always connected to WiFi while commuting or waiting for appointments.

I like the flashcards, but I'm concerned that I can't seem to get an answer to my question about Italian grammar. Your program tells us that "Questo sono nove euro e quello sette" is correct grammar in Italian, but "questo" is singular and "sono" is plural, so subject and verb do not agree. Am I missing something? Surely the native speakers you use would know that this construction was ungrammatical, but it does violate logic. IS IT CORRECT OR INCORRECT? Thanks.

I just found out from a professor at the university of colorado that the Italian grammar promoted by this program is INCORRECT. Can we trust the flashcards to be more accurate?

Hi- Any chance Fluenz will be creating an app? I just completed French 3 and am on to French 4. I find that the best way to study Fluenz is to do sessions every day. To do this I take my laptop with me so I can do sessions on the subway to and from my job in NYC. While the laptop works just fine it would be so much better if there was a Fleunz app I could use with my IPad instead.

I can't get the Spanish Flashcards to work on my new iPad.......all the options come up ( language, level, session), but once I make all my choices it won't go any further. Thanks!

Thanks! The Flashcards have been a great addition to the program. Everything that you can do to vary the options for staying freshly repetitive, the better! Thanks again.

Eric/Sonia: Flashcards are excellent! (I have French) In fact I often have to do session flashcards BEFORE repeating a DVD lesson/session because I can HEAR the troublesome new vocabulary pronunciations easier and repeat them over, and over and over.

It really slows me down when I do many of the DVD lesson segments (like Match the Words,Match the Phrase, Write the Words, Write the Phrases You Read) and I am unclear about EXACT/CORRECT pronunciation. All programs seems great for identifying word/phrase meanings (visually) and I so enjoy the thought that has gone into creating the specific dialogs and lesson progression.

That said, Sonia says "The #1 goal is one only.....to speak French." (Sonia is awesome.) If I were her only student and she asked how we might improve the DVD for me, I would say: "Click and play (listen) options in EVERY segment of each of the lessons." ( I want to click on any French word or phrase in ALL of the lesson segments and HEAR it....over and over.)

I know you have "reasons" for every detail of these lessons, but I'm not sure why the option hearing more French is not included.

You can be sure I will remain your most loyal fan. I think your approach to language learning is progressive, imaginative and by far the best available. Thanks for your efforts.

Just wound my way through my first set of Spanish flash cards. When done, and it says "tap here", tapping there does not take you back to the beginning, it replays the last card. At least on my iPad. Trying to back out hung Safari.

I just started Mandarin in January and love the flashcards because I can load them on my ipad. I find it difficult on the cd lessons to distinguish between when to us "dianr" and "yidianr" Just finished lesson 18 and can't grasp why some adjective are followed by "de" and others by "le" . Is there another source for our questions other than the blog?

I am frustrated using the flashcards on my IPad 2. After typing 2 or 3 responses the flashcards will not advance. If I do not type a response but merely swipe through the cards there is no problem. The problem appears to be with using the keyboard.

Hi Roberto! You can have at look yourself here: www.fluenz.com/commons/apps/flashcards. They basically cover all the vocab and sentences you go through on the DVD's, and they can be a very helpful tool in order to be able to memorize and retain the content you're learning. Hope this helps!

I just got the new iPad and tried out the flashcards. I'm wondering if I did something wrong because it didn't work well for me. I wasn't able to swipe to the next question, it took numerous tries to do so. Why isn't there just an app for this instead of going online??

Update: the performance of the flashcards with the iPad is so poor that I'm going to return the iPad to the store. There aren't even any good Italian learning apps for this either!

I was very excited about using the flash cards on my iPad, however "tapping" for audio won't work on Italian 3. I may have been in session 14. Thank you-I can't wait for discs 4 and 5.

Extremely minor annoyance here. When saving the Flashcard page to my iPad (using "Add to Homepage") there is no icon. Can you add an icon so it's not just a screenshot? Like I said, minor. I love the flashcards!

At the end of an iPad Flashcard session I am told how many I missed and shown an option to to those again. But when I hit the "Tap Here" on the screen nothing happens. Any suggestions?

I'll second the request for an Android app (and/or iOS too). I find the flashcards great in general. If you're feeling masochistic, you can load up some old lessons and really give your vocabulary a great refresher as needed. Working the flashcards immediately after a lessons helps pound in the material and as Jake says in Avatar, "the rest is just repetition". And that's a critical point for me - if you don't use it, you'll lose it. Yabla, flashcards, telemundo - all fair game for me in getting my brain acclimated.

Is there any difference between Version Beta 2 for iPad and what I am currently using on my Mac desktop and laptop?

Muellers, under "Type" when creating Flashcards, choose "Super Mix". This will give you both writing and listening. The red square will give you the answer.

Archiewilkie - the content will be the same on the flashcards between iPad and the desktop.

My iPad flash cards do not work. After first one, white type in screen will not appear Touching enter or anywhere on screen doesn't help. If I happen to touch screen in toe places at once next word appears with no opportunity to write anything. ??? I see these we're developed successfully in 2011. Am I doing something wrong?'m
Thx

Just for the record I had Rosetta Stone for 3 weeks before returning it more lost than I was when I started. I've had Fluenz for 3 day's and I'm so impressed I've told every person I know how great it is. Good Job Fluenz team, I'm on this journey for the long run and I'm glad I have you as my partner.
